Gonepteryx rhamni (Linnaeus, 1758) - Brimstone

A shot well showing wing venation in a slanting illumination.

Newly hatched brimstones prefer feeding on rich inflorescences of Lythrum salicaria flowering on inundated swamps. Bushes of Frangula alnus, the brimstone foodplant, grow in thickets rimming these swamps.

Range: N Africa, Europe, the temperate Asia east to Lake Baikal north to the northern taiga zone.

ssp.: rhamni (Linnaeus, 1758) (monotypical).
