Melitaea latonigena Eversmann, 1847.

An example where difference in chromosome number was used as a prove of species rank of this taxon, which in Altai Mts. fly on intermediate altitudes whereas the most close species Melitaea didyma (Esper, 1779) flies on low altitides on the Altai piedmonts (Lukhtanov, Kuznetsova, 1989).

In all species of the affinity of Melitaea didyma (Esper, 1779), females have red tones in their colouration much reduced (see M. sutchana on ajacent pictures). In M. latonigena majority of females lack them at all. If there were a shot of the male with wings open, it'd be a good esxample of sexual dimorphism.

Range: The mountains of South Siberia and Mongolia, East Siberia north-east to the Nera River basin.

ssp.: altaica Grum-Grshimailo, 1893 - the Altai Mts.

A female, wings open.

A larch parkland between the Chikty and Akbul Rivulets, 2000 m above sea level, the southern principle slope of the Yuzhno-Chuiskii mountain range, the upper Dzhazator River basin, Kosh-Agach District, Altai Republic, West SIberia, Russia. 15th July 1998. O. Kosterin.
Пример когда различия в числе хромосом было использовано для доказательства видового ранга этого таксона, который на Алтае летает на средних высотах тогда как наиболее близкий вид Melitaea didyma (Esper, 1779) летает на низкх высотах в предгорьях (Lukhtanov, Kuznetsova, 1989).
Ареал: горы Южной Сибири и Монголии, Восточная Сибирь на северо-восток до рю Нера.
ssp.: altaica Grum-Grshimailo, 1893 - Алтайские горы
