Erebia kefersteini Eversmann, 1851.
This species usually have black submarginal dots (corresponding to
the ocelli in most Satyrids), as showh on the neighbouring picture,
but individuals occur without them, as shown here. Interestingly, there
is another very close species, Erebia kindermanni Staudinger, 1881
(also shown on this page) ranging in Central and SW Altai only where
it (but in an intricate pattern of localities) replaces E. kefersteini,
in which individuals without dots are more frequent than with dots.
(Some butterly lovers in Russia believe the dot presence is a character of
distinction between these species, that is not correct).
Range: the mountains of South Siberia and Mongolia, from Altai (including
its parts within Kazakhstan and China) to East Sayan.
Ssp.: kefersteini Eversmann, 1851., except for SW Altai and
Kuznetsk Alatau.
