A larva

As feeding in Siberia on Rhodiola spp., the larvae of this species are found probably most high in the Altai mountains, on large-stoned screes in the nival belt, high above the aline meadow belt, since there in rock crevices grow two close species, Rhodiola quadrifida (Pall.) Fisch. et Mey and Rh. coccinea (Royl) Boriss. (I don't beleive them being different species). This larva was found on a stone, busking in the sun, at exactly 3000 m above sea level. Noteworthy, at the same time imagines of P. phoebus were not seldom flewing above this rather stee mountain slope.

A SW slope of a mountain SE of the peak Ilyas and SW of the peak Zhaniktu, which divides sources of the Chikty Rivulet, 3000 m above sea level, the Yuzhno-Chuiskii mountain range, the upper Dzhazator River basin, Kosh-Agach District, Altai Republic, West Siberia, Russia. 15th July 1998.
