Clossiana freja (Thunberg, 1791) (= Boloria freja) - Frejya's Fritillary.

The butterfly shows a well-expressed camuflage disjunctive pattern of the wing underside. A good example of an arcto-alpine species.

Range: the tundra, forest-tundra and forest zones and the mountains of Eurasia (south to Mongolia) and North America.

ssp.: pallida Elwes, 1899 (= calais Fruhstorfer,1916); range: the mountains of South Siberia.

A female; wings closed.

A dwarf birch (Betula rotundifolia Spach) montane tundra at 2200 m above sea level in the Argem (Direntai) Stream basin, 15 km W of the village Dzhazatr, on the eastern spurs of the Katunskiy Mt. Range, Kosh-Agach District, Central Altai Mts., West Siberia, Russia. 13th July, 1988. Oleg Kosterin.
